Amazing Ladies Feature: The Cocoa Nuts Fair Trade Chocolates

If the line goes "diamonds are a girl's best friend" then chocolate must be a close second. If you're ever offered a cocoa confection, try saying no. I dare you.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting The Cocoa Nuts gals Megan & Carrie at the Vancouver Baby & Family Fair (see that post here). I enjoyed learning about their business, which offers fair trade  high quality chocolates for special events including corporate functions, weddings, baby showers (and gender reveal parties!) to name a few. With a background in corporate events & a passion for supporting free trade, these ladies have found a delicious way to combine the two. Read on to find out more about this yummy venture with a conscience.

1.     What kind of products and/ or services do you offer?

We are a Fairtrade chocolate company specializing in events - baby showers, baby reveals, anniversaries, weddings, and corporate events. All of our chocolates are Certified Fairtrade by Fairtrade Canada and contain all natural ingredients.

2.     What is the price point?

Approximately $2.00 per chocolate.

3.     How long have you been operating and how did you start?

The business started as a hobby, and has turned into an adventure. My business partner, Carrie, and I have been working at this for about 6 months now.  We started working with Fairtrade Canada in the summer and the interest in our business has really started to develop in the past 2 months.

4.     How did you decide what to do?

My family lived in Ethiopia when I was growing up; as a result, I’m strongly passionate about supporting people in developing countries.  I tend to seek out products which are ethically sourced and I noticed that there was a lack of chocolate companies using Fairtrade chocolate. Our love of chocolate and passion for ethically sourced products resulted in the birth of The Cocoa Nuts.

5.     What is your favourite part of what you do? What is the biggest challenge?

We are really passionate about the Fairtrade movement and it is exciting to see our customers and contacts get excited about it, too. We also really enjoy collaborating with other small businesses – it is encouraging to see so many businesses, especially businesses started by entrepreneurial women, working together and supporting each other.

Right now, as a small business entering a fairly saturated market, we are struggling with brand recognition. In addition to events, we are aiming to get our products into those retail stores whose goals align with ours. It can be challenging to connect with the right people and create a product offering which will pique their interest.

6.     Any advice to other ladies/ moms looking to start their own business?

Juggling family, work, and other commitments can make it challenging to stay on track. Set realistic goals ; this will cause you to be accountable to yourself.  At each milestone, celebrate your successes - even the small ones!

It is also important to appreciate your support network!  We are so thankful to family, friends, and even acquaintances who have supported us in the start-up process. We would definitely be open to helping other ladies who think that there may be some opportunities to cross-network.
