Amazing Mom Feature: Helen Sands, Hushababy Consulting Inc.

The greatest satisfaction I get in my work is when parents tell me I have changed their lives and they cannot believe how well rested they are after sleep training success. I want all families to enjoy the gift of fantastic sleep.

– Helen Sands, Founder of Hushababy Consulting Inc and Mom of 3.5 year old twins who are fantastic sleepers!

I think one of the biggest concerns parents have is establishing healthy sleep for their children- especially in the beginning when sleep is sacred and rare- and having to address sleep concerns when they arise. Some parents wonder how they can help their child sleep better- and depending on your child and/ or parenting style, this may be more challenging - and eventually turn to a sleep consultant for help.

Speaking with other Moms I know, we have all had different experiences with our babies and their sleep habits (I'm planning another post on sleep soon to discuss this further). While the ages of our bumpkins does range a bit, overall we can still compare how they are/ were at different stages. I know 4 babies that are within a week of Ariana, all of which have their own unique personalities and sleep habits. Including Ari, 3 of them have slept through the night (ie 5 hours+ straight) since approx. 2 months of age; 1 wakes 1- 2 times per night; and the last lil lady still wakes up every 2 hours. At this point, they are all 6 months old. So if you are the parent of a lil one that still isn't letting you catch up on some much needed zzzzs, take comfort knowing that you are not alone!

With this in mind, it can be hard to determine what approach to take and when. Some babies just seem to need more help learning to sleep. I know of a few families that called in a sleep consultant to help them regain sanity in their homes, and know there was no looking back after doing so.

With that said, it is my great pleasure to introduce you to Helen Sands, a professional Sleep Consultant and owner of Hushababy Consulting Inc. Below you will find a little bio and back ground info about Helen, followed by my Amazing Mom feature questions. I am so grateful for her agreeing to work with me and hoping to collaborate with Helen on future posts about sleep, and hope you will help me welcome her to TPB! I hope you enjoy.

A little about Helen...

With over 30 years specializing in baby and child sleep consulting, it has become my life’s work to successfully teach children how to independently sleep beautifully! Hushababy Consulting is also a proud member of the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants.
I am a Mom first, but an entrepreneur at heart. I live in Langley, BC but work with clients all over the world. We lead a busy life, with a dog and two cats thrown into the mix!
It was always my goal to ensure that I could work (mostly) from home. Eighteen months after my business started, I gave up working in the education industry and have never looked back.
It is my intention to ensure that parents have a definitive plan of action to help their little ones sleep well and that they (parents) feel confident about beginning sleep training.
Many parents are fearful of change but they are also delighted when they see over time, what their beautiful child is capable of achieving. It is my job to give them that gentle “push” to take the plunge and the most common comment I hear is “it was nothing like I imagined, and I wish I’d started sleep training long ago!”
Sometimes it is very difficult to juggle everything, that’s for sure.  As a single mother, it is a very busy life.  My son is often saying to me “sit down Mommy”.  I think he sees how busy I am so when he says that, I sit down immediately! He is right. I have always been a bit of a workaholic and so it’s not uncommon to work 7 days per week but I try never to work when I have the children with me and my cell phone is off when the children are present for “Mommy time”.
I also love working with new consultants to help them on the road to their own successful business.

And now for my Amazing Mom Feature questions...

1.   What kind of products and/ or services do you offer?
Baby and Child Sleep Consultations. I am also a Newborn Specialist, so I assist parents with their newborn babies in every aspect of newborn care.

2.   What is the price point?
$339 and up

3.   How long have you been operating and how did you start?
8 years officially, 32 years unofficially.  Many years ago while rocking my friend’s very large and heavy toddler “Christopher” to sleep (which took almost 2 hours) I realized that there must be a better way!  To have to rock a screaming overwrought toddler to sleep on a hot summers night (over 40 degrees in Australia!), was a very difficult thing to achieve! I was experiencing unbelievably excruciating back pain and I could not continue along this path!  I was exhausted, in pain, and sweating profusely! I realized that parents the world over must be experiencing this issue and that they all deserved great sleep! And so the journey began…

4.   How did you decide what to do?
It was easy. I’ve always loved working with children and as per my last answer, once I identified how great the need was for children to achieve healthy sleep, the seed was planted!

5.   What is your favourite part of what you do? What is the biggest challenge?
My favourite part is hearing how wonderfully the babies and children are doing once they have undergone sleep training. There aren’t really that many challenges associated with my work. I love talking to people and I love the subject matter!

6.   Any advice to other ladies/ moms looking to start their own business?
If you believe in the idea, and you have a passion for it, you will succeed! Don’t let anyone tell you “it cannot be done”!

In addition to sleep consulting services, Hushababy Consulting offers training to other Moms who would like to work from home in a very rewarding career. If you would like to contact Helen and/ or learn more about Hushababy Consulting, check out her website: www.hushababy.com
