Feature Friday: Music Together of the Fraser Valley

With Spring Break just around the corner- and the Summer Holidays not far behind- we all start thinking of activities that are family friendly to occupy the kiddies. While it's great to find things focused on the kids, it's also important to do things as a family. Music is a universally understood language and is enjoyed by children and adults alike. Sharing in an activity like music as a family can bring everyone together and be a bonding experience.

Today I'm featuring Erin Parr of Music Together of the Fraser Valley, a great organization offering music classes for the whole family to participate in. Children from newborn to five years old and their parents/ caregivers attend the classes together to help foster a love of music. Parents are provided with materials such as songbooks and CDS of the music played in class to take home and encourage family members to enjoy the teachings beyond the classes. If you've been trying to find something for the entire family to enjoy, why not make it musical?

Thanks to Erin Parr for working with TPB.

1.     What kind of products and/ or services do you offer?
I offer family music classes for parents with kids age birth through five. Each week we sing, dance, play instruments and foster a love of music.

2.     What is the price point?
$150 for 10 weeks includes 2 CD’s, songbook, parent education DVD and weekly fun filled 45 minute classes!

3.     How long have you been operating and how did you start?
I have been a music therapist for 12 years and offering Music Together classes for the past year and a half.

4.     How did you decide what to do?
After having two kids myself I found it hard to find classes we could do together as a family, most other classes are age divided i.e. 2 year old 3 year old etc. Music Together is for the whole family!  I love the philosophy of Music Together and promoting and fostering a love of music is an amazingly rewarding career!

5.     What is your favorite part of what you do?
Teaching Music Together has become my passion, I love seeing families interact and create music together. I believe that everyone has the ability to be musical we simply need to be given the opportunity.

6.     Any advice to other ladies/ moms looking to start their own business?
Shedule your work time. It feels horrible when you are trying to work when it should be family time. The biggest challenges are finding the life/work balance.

Registration for Spring 2014 classes starting in April now open. Locations in Chilliwack, Cloverdale, and Langley. Click here for more info.

In addition to the Music Together classes, Erin also offers music therapy to help children and families address a variety of concerns in early childhood development. This includes speech & language development, and improving abilities such as gross & fine motor skills, physical & kinesthetic, psychological, social, and educational. Sessions are available in one- on- one and group formats. If you are curious about music therapy or the Music Together classes, contact Erin at eparr@shaw.ca.
